More about the 1934 wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Kent - Princess Olga in a tiara Posted by Kongetro on February 11, 2021, 3:27 am After having seen a couple of recent posts regarding the wedding of Prince George, Duke of Kent and Princess Marina I began to look for some more information on the event. I was especially interested in checking if any other splendid event(s) took place in connection with the wedding. The wedding ceremony itself, as we know, took place on November 29th, 1934. Now, I came across a photo (or rather a negative) on the Royal Collection's website of Princess Olga of Yugoslavia which is dated November 28th, 1934: https://www.rct.uk/collection/search#/3/collection/2141437/olga-princess-paul-of-yugoslaiva-and-prince-nikola-of-yugoslavia-28-november-1934 As she is dressed in gala and with that date it is likely that she was photographed wearing what she would have worn to an event around the wedding. I have been able to find information about a dinner hosted at Buckingham Palace on November 26th. Then the following day an evening reception was held, also at Buckingham Palace. I have also found a small article stating that the soon-to-be wife and husband together with Queen Mary attended a theatre performance on what I deduct took place on the day before the wedding, i.e. November 28th. But the small article did not mention anything about a banquet or dinner at the Palace. Does anybody know whether such a dinner took place? If so, it could be that Princess Olga was photographed before attending this dinner. Or maybe this is what she wore for any of the other occasions. Regarding the wedding events of the Duke of Kent and Princess Marina, I recall Beth posting some images of newspaper reports from a Ball held at Buckingham Palace, which I remember listed the Duchess of York wearing her Turquoise Tiara. However, I cannot seem to be able to find that post, which was made around 3 to 4 years ago.

Events published 1. There was a private dinner at Buckingham Palace on 26 November 2. There was a formal reception for approximately 800 at Buckingham Palace on 27 November. According to some reports this was to commence around 9.45pm. Other reports indicated that it ended around midnight. It was not a ball. 3. There was a visit to a theatre on 28 November by the engaged couple, Queen Mary and Princess Nicholas of Greece. It was not a formal gala occasion. This event was not advertised in the press beforehand Re the dinner on 26 November. I haven't collected any detailed information about it. I strongly suspect there will be very little in the press. Evening reception at Buckingham Palace The description in the Sunday Times gives the best overview of the jewels and dresses. I did this in 2 cuttings --so to read it correctly people have to think it is all one item! Daily Telegraph I suspect that Princess Marina wore the tiara given to her by the Duke of Kent in its all diamond setting. It is this one For years this tiara was discussed on the RJWMB, as various people discussed whether it existed and what it might look like. It also had a ruby centre piece, making it a versatile tiara. Finally, Ursula and Laura identified it. I have often wondered if her sister-in-law, Lady Greville wore the ruby and diamond necklace now with QEII. Theatre visit The above items are by no means all that might be found -- it just represents some of the research I have collected over time. From my files, I have selected the most descriptive of the items. At present I am not up to doing the necessary research to see if more photos can be found.

She is Countess Mercati and she was the wife of Count Mercati, Chamberlain to ex King George II of Greece. The Countess is said to have been a "Continental Society leader" and she had accompanied her husband to London to attend the wedding. In the photo she is dressed "up to the nines" with a tiara of dark coloured gems. Topfoto has dated this photo to November 28th - so another photo with this date attached to it with the subject wearing grand jewels. I remembered reading these but couldn't remember all the details. I'm really glad you posted about Princess Marina's wedding gift tiara, which I've thought looked like Queen Mary’s Diamond Bandeau in those pictures. I do wonder what became of the piece as it would have looked so wonderful worn by her daughter or daughters-in-law.

Perhaps it was sold; perhaps it was dismantled. There is so much mystery about what happened to a lot of the Kent jewels!
