Is the Queen wearing an emerald necklace? Or could it be some other stones? Have this piece of jewellery been seen on anybody else? Unfortunately I don't have a date for when the photo was taken. And I think I just stumbled upon another photo of Queen Mary wearing emeralds in a necklace I hadn't seen before: Now, this time I do have a date (thanks to the National Portrait Gallery site where I was taken to for this photo - a larger version of the photo can be found if going to NPG's wesite: https://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/portrait/mw175352/Queen-Mary-King-George-V). I believe that the first photo posted by Kongetro shows Queen Mary wearing the emerald and diamond necklace presented to her by the Ladies of India during the Delhi Durbar in 1911. Queen Mary wore it to the Durbar on 2 separate occasions. And (here it is worn with the rest of the emerald parure but without the emerald drop) This is the necklace which Queen Mary later had dismantled and reconfigured as the choker, which was later worn by Princess Diana. Re dating the photo posted by Kongetro. Various photo agencies have either the same or photos from the same photographic session with dates ranging from circa 1910 to circa 1914. The BnF has a copy of one and gives a very precise date: 25 June 1913. Below is a detail from one of the photos in the BnF From 24 June to 26 June 1913 President Poincare paid a visit to London. Queen Mary does not feature in his welcome and drive through the city as Mme Poincare did not come to London. However, Queen Mary did attend day time ceremonial events including a visit to watch a horse show at Olympia. I strongly suspect that the Queen may have worn this outfit and the Ladies of India necklace for that occasion but, unfortunately, the only images I could find are too indistinct to say that with certainty. The President and the Royals at Olympia Comparison photos of the necklace worn at the Durbar functions and the 1913 photos. I could not find a copy of the photo used by Kongetro in the UK press, or in Royal Collection or the NPG UK. I wonder if anyone would have the time to look at what is in the French press?

At present I can only guess at the origin of this necklace, but it is possible that it was one of the two which Mary Adelaide, Duchess of Teck, had from her mother, Augusta, Duchess of Cambridge. I think that it was Hugh Roberts who drew attention to the fact that Mary Adelaide was given one of the necklaces before her mother's death. Later Mary Adelaide also had what are referred to as the Cambridge emeralds. It is possible that Queen Mary was either given or purchased the smaller of the two necklace -- but this is very much a guess on my part. Mary Adelaide wearing the Cambridge emeralds As can readily be seen the emeralds in the necklace worn by Mary Adelaide are much larger than the ones worn by Queen Mary. Years ago Baxter of the RJWMB drew attention to the fact that Queen Mary (as Princess of Wales) was photographed wearing this smaller necklace in 1907, which proves that she had this emerald necklace long before she acquired the Cambridge emeralds for use in the Delhi Durbar parure. After she became Queen this smaller emerald necklace was frequently worn for significant day time events. Perhaps the most prominent was the Investiture of the Prince of Wales in 1911. She then wore it and her emerald shamrock brooch during the tour of Ireland in 1911 following the coronation. Queen Mary also wore it for the Alexandra Rose Day drive in June 1913.
