Princess Margaret. Other items given during the 1958 tour of Canada
Posted by Beth on May 2, 2021, 2:03 pm
Apart from the Dogwood blossom brooch given by British Columbia, Princess Margaret was given other mementos of the 1958 tour.
Non jewellery items included a mink coat from the Canadian government (presented in Ottawa) and a chinchilla cape given by the City Council of Ottawa.
Perhaps the most unusual of all was the presentation of Portland Island in British Columbia (re-named Princess Margaret Island) to the Princess. There was much speculation that Princess Margaret would develop a ranch on the island but instead in 1967 she handed the land back to the Province to be kept as a marine park.
Other items of jewellery included
1. A gold maple leaf brooch with a diamond presented by the City of Montreal.
2. At Banff the rector of the church where she attend a Sunday service presented, on behalf of the congregation, Princess Margaret with a gold maple leaf and beaver brooch and gold maple leaf earrings.
3. Christie's auctioned a pair of pearl and diamond earrings which according to the auction notes were acquired by the Princess in Canada in 1958, but whether they were a gift or a purchase is unclear to me.
Really love seeing all your posts about Princess Margaret's jewels in Canada! This is one of my favourite tours of Canada (which I've only covered briefly), especially because she spent a lot of time in my city, Victoria, to celebrate the centennial of British Columbia’s entry into Confederation!
I think some of you will enjoy this twitter thread I made after visiting Government House in Victoria,HERE,which is the Residence of the Lieutenant Governor, the Queen's Representative, and where the Royal Family stay when they visit. I also wrote an article on Castleholic, HERE, about Hatley Castle, which has links to multiple generations of the Royal Family, and which Princess Margaret visited during her stay.
Here are some of the images of evening events I've found!
Princess Margaret attending a Ball in Victoria wearing the Lotus Flower Tiara, her Greville Pearl Earrings, and Ivy Brooch. Note the guests in day dress and hats in the background.
Princess Margaret wore the Lotus Flower Tiara and her Pearl Earrings again for a Dinner at the Club Mount Stephen in Montreal, along with a maple leaf brooch that looks to be the one presented by the City of Montreal from the list above.
Great photos The Royal Watcher, and a very interesting set of items to read. Thank you!
In the last photo where Princess Margaret is exiting her car and wearing a maple leaf brooch -- I don't think that it is the one which was auctioned by Christie's.
On the other hand, if the date of the last photo is accurate then the maple leaf brooch Princess Margaret was wearing makes sense of a report in the Daily Telegraph 6 August 1958 which stated that the maple leaf brooch had diamonds forming a fleur de lys.
Ursula and I have been researching this brooch for some time. The way the world works is amazing.
In fact, I had discussed it at the Christies auction of Princess Margaret’s jewels about the brooch case not marching the brooch. The brooch was wonderful to hold. Not heavy at all.
A page at Ursula’s site is being posted shortly.

Great eye Royal Watcher. It is indeed the City of Montreal brooch that she is wearing as she gets out of the car.
