The so called Devonshire emerald parure

The sale of the late Duchess' brooch got me looking at their collection again.
Google is full of pictures of the Devonshire emerald parure, a beautiful set of jewels no doubt but no information is given regarding the link (if any) these jewels have to the Cavendish family.
regarding the link to the Devonshire family Duchess Georgiana died in 1806, Duchess Elizabeth died in 1824. The next duchess was Louisa who married in 1892.
The 7th duke when 2nd Earl of Burlington was married to Lady Blanche Howard between 1829 and 1840. His father was married to Hon Louisa o Callaghan between 1807 and 1812. He was killed in 1812 and she died in 1863. His father was married to Lady Elizabeth Compton between 1782 and his death in 1834.
I think it’s just as likely to be a Burlington jewel, especially since Lady Elizabeth Compton was an heiress. The tiara and necklace look to be a marriage. The necklace looks a lot older maybe even eighteenth century or mid Victorian whereas the tiara is more like a late nineteenth century item.
The necklace was given by Catherine the Great to the ancestor of the Marquess of Lothian, whose descendent sold it some years ago.

As Dmitry pointed out the necklace belonged to the Marquess of Lothian, and according to the family's history the emeralds were given to an ancestor (Earl of Buckinghamshire) by Catherine the Great.
The necklace was first advertised for auction by Sotheby's in 1996.
At the time the press noted that it was to be sold to help pay for the restoration/conservation of Ferniehirst Castle.
Whether the jewel was withdrawn prior to auction or failed to meet a set reserve is something I have not investigated.
Whatever the situation, it was again advertised for auction in Sotheby's London jewel sale on 28 November 2000. According to the press the necklace contained 83.5 carats of emeralds and 31.5 carats of diamonds, the jewel having been made in 1832.
I have only found one image of a Marchioness of Lothian wearing the necklace. That was Antonella, the mother of the current Marquess.
Marchioness of Lothian wearing the necklace in 1956
According to press reports she wore the necklace to the 1953 Coronation, but I haven't found any photos.
It's been proven that Monarchs are also big and extravagant givers, they are not just the recipients of lavish and spectacular gifts.
Regards,
Dave.
