How many Marie Antoinette's necklaces did own Barbara Hutton?
Posted by A92 on November 12, 2021, 7:57 pm
Reading this IG post I am wondering how many necklaces formerly in queen Marie Antoinette of France's collection belonged to Barbara W. Hutton:
Maybe she had a couple of necklaces from Marie Antoinette? Or maybe the sellers claimed this illustrious provenance in order to get higher bids? Barbara Hutton's collection, as seen in the pictures, was plenty of pearls, so I doubt all of them had the same provenance
Re: How many Marie Antoinette's necklaces did own Barbara Hutton?
I was really surprised by the information that Barbara Hutton had 3 necklaces said to have belonged to Marie Antoinette! Thank you!
All that I know about the necklace in the first photo is that Vincent Meylan mentions it in his book on Christie's, and noted that it was reputed to have belonged to Marie Antoinette. Obviously the Queen would have owned more than one set of pearls, but unless jewels have remained with the one family known to have inherited jewels from Marie Antoinette's daughter, I suspect that proving provenance would be difficult.
I am eagerly waiting the release of Vincent Meylan's forthcoming book. What a treasure trove that will prove to be! And, hopefully, it will solve a number of queries about the jewels of the Queen.
