Sotheby's Platinum Jubilee Tiara Exhibition Posted by The Royal Watcher on April 14, 2022, 2:12 am The Rosebery Tiara will be among the 50 Tiaras on Display at the Sotheby's Platinum Jubilee Exhibition! A non-selling exhibition of noble and aristocratic jewels will present tiaras with British and European royal provenance. It will chart the history of this most stately jewellery format since the late 18th century, when it was exalted to courtly fashion by Napoleon Bonaparte and Empress Joséphine, in emulation of ancient Greek and Roman wearers. Prince Albert advanced this trend, as part of his wider interest in the art and engineering of jewellery making, by designing four tiaras for Queen Victoria. The tiaras on view will follow the evolution in designs prompted by monarchic taste, societal and economic shifts and influence from other art forms, through to contemporary jewellers redefining tiaras today. Starring among these is a diamond tiara from the 1830s, designed as a wreath of diamond-set leaves in homage to the classical designs of ancient Rome and directly influenced by the revival of this symmetrical style during Napoléon’s rule. Heading into the 20th century, is an exquisite turquoise cabochon and diamond tiara by Van Cleef & Arpels, crafted in the 1960s at the peak of the West’s fascination for Indian culture and jewellery design. Further highlights include an impressive diamond tiara from the 1880s, comprised of ornate scrollwork and foliate detailing, and another from the early 20th century, designed as a series of graduated scrolling, openwork stylised ribbon heart motifs. If visitors are tempted by the glittering sights, there is an option to purchase tiaras from a new generation of contemporary British designers.

A very interesting piece by Vincent Meylan on the Furstenberg tiara, but surely in the last paragraph he should have written 'male courtiers', not 'male courtesans'

As the quote is a translation of an original letter, I suspect that the word courtesans might have been in the original. I don't fully understand all the nuances in the quote. For example, what is the significance of the description of the ladies' dresses? Why would Prince Starhemberg say "And the ladies, including the princess, had white silk dresses embroidered with golden lace." It is the phrase "including the princess" which intrigues me. It all made me want to know more about the lifestyle of the times. Even if the word courtesans wasn't in the original, how do we know it is a mistake by Vincent Meylan? A number of others handle a text such as this before it is published. Christies have professional editors, so if it was a mistake, surely they would have spotted it? Or perhaps whoever keyed in the Lot notes had a minor lapse of concentration.

The courtesan is derived from the same source as courtier. It probably referred to someone who served at a court. Perhaps our modern usage hadn't occurred at this time. Odd that it said male though, it does feel a female word.

I hope that a lot of images become available so that those, like me, who have no chance of visiting the exhibition will get to see at least some of the tiaras. The concept reminds me of the Cartier exhibition of tiaras before the 1902 coronation.
