As we rapidly approach the Coronation of Charles III I thoughtIshould be back to my series on Royal Family Orders of the UK (dormant the last two years while I packed up the family house of the last 92 years, sold it and moved. My listrary of reference books is unpacked and on shelves gain at last!)
The next order, which set the format for the following reigns, was established by Edward VII.
The best source on this is... Risk, James; Pownall, Henry; Stanley, David; Tamplin, John (2001). Royal Service (Volume II). Lingfield, Surrey: Third Millennium. specifically chapter 1, pp.13-43.
Edward's order replaced the first two grades of the Victoria & Albert, with grades 3 & 4 being replaced by specific badges of office for the different ranks of ladies-in-waiting.
The ribbon for the order was based on The King's The King's racing colours. They are (from outside edges in) a thin black edgestripe, red stripe, almost half the size of the centre stripe, a thin gold stripe, about one-fifth of the red stripe, and a blue stripe, almost double the red stripe.
The Order was issued in two sizes, and presented before the 1902 Coronation.
Re: Royal Family Order of Edward VII - Size 1, Queen Alexandra
Size one, which is very similar in design to the middle size badge of the Order of George IV, with diamond laurels of oak leaves and acorns surrounding a portrait of the King encircled in diamonds.
