The larger size was given to Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth the Queen mother. These and five smaller badges were given at Christmas 1952." You can see the difference in size of Princess Margarets three badges of family orders - size 1 of her sister, size 2 of her father and size 3 of her grandfather. Princess Alexandra was awarded the Garter in June 2003. In recent years when wearing the sash of the Garter she has worn her family orders on the right shoulder, instead of left. Prince Richard's older brother was killed in an air crash just over six week later. He succeeded his father as Duke of Gloucester in 1974. Birgitte was presented with the Queen's Royal Family Order, in second size, the year after her marriage, in 1973. He was created Earl of Wessex the same day, with agreement that the title Duke of Edinburgh would be bestowed on him upon his father's title merging with the crown. Sophie recieved Elizabeth II's Royal Family Order, in size two, in 2004, in time for her to wear it at the wedding of the Danish Crown Prince in Copenhagen. She was presened the Royal Family Order of Elizabeth II in 2017 and first wore the size two badge to the Diplomatic Corps reception at Buckingham Palace in December 2017. Her badge is painted on glass, instead of the traditional ivory.
