Royal Family Order of Elizabeth II, 1952

"The Family Order of Queen Elizabeth II is suspended from a yellow silk watered ribbon the same size width of her father's order, and has been made in two sizes. The larger size was given to Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth the Queen mother. These and five smaller badges were given at Christmas 1952."

Size one badge, belonging to Queen Mary, later worn by Princess Margaret.

Size two badge presented to HRH Princess Alice Duchess of Gloucester at Christmas 1952.

The badge design followed the format of King George VI's Family Order. However, the 18 brilliants were in six groups of three, each divided by a baguette. The portait of the Queen wearing the George IV diadem and the Cartier necklace from the Nizam was based upon a photographic portrait by Dorothy Wilding.

"Her Majesty The Queen's Family Order, again made by Garrards, was bestowed by her at Christmas 1952 on ladies of the Royal Family. Subsequently it was given to some who had married into the Royal Family and to the Princess Royal, for whom a new badge was made in 1969."

The original recipients of the order are listed as

Size 1:
Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother (mother of Elizabeth II)
Queen Mary (grandmother of Elizabeth II)

Size 2:
Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon (younger sister of Elizabeth II)
Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood (aunt of Elizabeth II)
Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester (aunt of Elizabeth II)
Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent (aunt of Elizabeth II)
Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy (first cousin of Elizabeth II)
Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone (great-aunt of Elizabeth II)

I note that the above number eight, while the quote below lists seven, two large and five smaller badges being made. All seven were worn at the 1953 Coronation.

After Queen Mary's death, her size one badge was worn by Princess Margaret. Were there eight badges made? Or was one, possibly Princess Alice Countess of Athlone, given Princess Margaret's size two badge after Queen Mary's death?

The Queen Mother was presented with a size one badge of her daughter's Royal Family Order, which was very similar in the size one badge presented by her husband.

Although she now had three different Royal Family Orders, upon receiving her daughter's order she stopped wearing the badge of George V's order.

Queen Mary was presented with her grandaughter's family order in size one at Sandringham during Christmas 1952. Unfortunately we do not have an image of her wearing the badge.

Originally presented with a size two badge at Christmas 1952, after the death of Queen Mary in late March 1953, she started to wear her grandmother's size one badge, obviously with her sister's permission.

You can see the difference in size of Princess Margarets three badges of family orders - size 1 of her sister, size 2 of her father and size 3 of her grandfather.

The Duchess of Gloucester received the size two badge at Christmas 1952.

All three of her Royal Family Order badges (George V, George VI and Elizabeth II) were size two.

Princess Marina was presented a size two badge of Elizabeth II's family order. Like her sister-in-law, HRH The Duchess of Gloucester, all three of her family order badges were size two.

Princess Alexandra received her cousin's family order, in size 2, at Christmas 1952 a year after she received George VI's.

Princess Alexandra was awarded the Garter in June 2003. In recent years when wearing the sash of the Garter she has worn her family orders on the right shoulder, instead of left.

One occasion where she actually wore the family order badges on the left shoulder is shown at...

Did Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone receive her type 2 size badge of Queen Elizabeth II's family order at Christmas 1952? Were there six size two badges initially made, not five? She definitely wore one at the 1953 coronation along size her size 4 badge of the George V family order and the size 1 badge of the V&A she received permission to wear after her mother's death.

You can really see the difference between the size two ERII badge and the size four GV badge.

Katharine Worsley married HRH The 2nd Duke of Kent at York Minster on 8th June 1961. Later that year she receied the Royal Family Order, with the badge in size 2.

HRH retired from official royal duties in 2002

Birgitte Eva van Deurs Henriksen married Prince Richard of Gloucester at on 8 July 1972 at St Andrew's Church, Barnwell, Northamptonshire. Prince Richard's older brother was killed in an air crash just over six week later. He succeeded his father as Duke of Gloucester in 1974.

Birgitte was presented with the Queen's Royal Family Order, in second size, the year after her marriage, in 1973.

Lady Diana Spencer married HRH The Prince of Wales at St Paul's Cathedral London on 29 July 1981.

She was presented with the Royal Family Order of Elizabeth II after the birth of her first child, Prince William, in 1982.

Sophie Rhys-Jones married HRH The Prince Edward on 19 June 1999 at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. He was created Earl of Wessex the same day, with agreement that the title Duke of Edinburgh would be bestowed on him upon his father's title merging with the crown.

Sophie recieved Elizabeth II's Royal Family Order, in size two, in 2004, in time for her to wear it at the wedding of the Danish Crown Prince in Copenhagen.

Camilla Rosemary Shand, later Parker Bowles, married HRH The Prince of Wales on 9 April 2005 at
the town hall at Windsor Guildhall, with a subsequent religious "service of blessing" at St George's Chapel.

On 30 October 2007 she was presented with the Royal Family Order of Elizabeth II in size 1 badge.

Catherine Elizabeth Middleton married the newly enobled HRH The Duke of Cambridge at Westminster Abbey on 29 April 2011.

She was presened the Royal Family Order of Elizabeth II in 2017 and first wore the size two badge to the Diplomatic Corps reception at Buckingham Palace in December 2017.

Her badge is painted on glass, instead of the traditional ivory. Perhaps setting the trend for the future
