Death of the Duchess of Buccleuch Posted by Janet on May 2, 2023, 4:00 am The sad news that the Duchess died today very prematurely; she was just 68. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/05/01/duchess-of-buccleuch-duke-literary-award/ I have seen Beth’s and the Royal Watcher’s excellent summaries on the incredible Buccleuch collection (surely the best collection of jewels of any British noble family still in existence?) but I can’t recall ever seeing any photos of the recently deceased Duchess wearing any of the family jewels. Does anyone know of any? Maybe it just wasn’t her style, although she certainly had an impressive noble ancestry of her own. The photographs of the Buccleuch jewels tend to focus on her mother-in-law and grand mother-in-law, who was a contemporary of Queen Elizabeth, consort of George VI. I had the chance last year to see the Buccleuch belt tiara at the Sotheby’s exhibition for the Platinum Jubilee for Queen Elizabeth II. I wouldn’t describe it as beautiful, it seemed more cumbersome but it was certainly impressive and I cannot imagine it was easy to wear.

If I have read the caption correctly, she is the blond haired lady.

I actually think the recently deceased Duchess is the brunette in the middle next to the blonde who I think is Lady Charlotte-Anne Montagu Douglas Scott, daughter of the 9th Duke and sister of the current Duke. The picture must have been taken before February 1993 as this when Duchess Molly died, the logical option being in 1991 when Lady Charlotte married. I had not seen a picture of either Duchesses Jane or Molly in their later years and so this is a first also. They were both great beauties of their generation and it is striking how elegant both ladies looked even in their later years. Duchess Molly could give any senior royal lady a run for their money in terms of wearing incredible jewels and it is good to see that even in later life she knew how to glitter. I presume Duchess Jane is wearing the huge emerald which sometimes was worn as a buckle to the Belt tiara.

I agree with Janet’s interpretation of the photo lineup. The caption provided says from the right which means we read from right to left rather than the more usual left to right.

I would guess 88-90. By the way, just saw an online article about the home of the duchess’s son, Lord Dalkeith. Link: House and Garden

I truly hope they can maintain their status and wealth and that they do not follow similar fates of such families who had to sell up or lose their great estate through the UK's dreaded death taxes structure.
