First item on the agenda was to discuss abatement zones for EDC to consider. EDC has several tools in its tool box for helping developers and one question was should they narrow it to the blvd or leave it open city wide as the attorney has prepared for EDC. The Board seemed to be in agreement to leave it as is, although Patricia Ward felt they should meet in executive session some time to discuss this in private. Dan Chisholm stated we need more rooftops. JoAnn Butler, who is in real estate, states people looking for housing are looking for three bedroom, two bath, and most of the old houses in River Oaks, are not that. More to come in the next workshop.
Next item was to discuss to contract with FlyRock Media, which is currently 3000 a year for the company to update the website Shop River Oaks and help business sign up to be on the website. Last month the website averaged 8 views a day, which questioned the value of the website. Facebook was also brought up. Marvin stated the city cannot monitor facebook since facebook is blocked at city hall from being viewed on the city hall internet. I asked that at some point on the website the city have a map that shows where and what businesses are in River Oaks. Sal and Jason from CISD gave the board quite an education on the newer free medias that are available. Instagram and Twitter being the ones that they both use the most. This will probably also come up at the next workshop July 11.
After Jason and Sal's lengthy presentation on social media. They then spoke on the issue that they were in chambers to begin with, which is this years River Oaks Fun Run. Lots of talk on things that went right last year. Some recommendations for this year was to get more shirts and get them earlier. Perhaps changing the route of the run to avoid hills was another suggestion. Jason felt this event had outgrown the community center and needed to move to possibly being at the football stadium. He was asked if he could use his connections at CISD to see if they could use the facility. He stated would rather someone from the city ask and Joann Butler spoke up and said that they no longer have the person they worked with (Laina McDonald)is no longer with the school district. Butler also stated that they have a new superintendent and things aren't quite the same as they were before. Marvin spoke up and said he has the superintendents number and he would call to see if the Fun Run could use the football stadium.
Gordon made a recommendation that next years Fun Run raise money for Christmas in Action. At that point, both Sal and Jason felt, although Christmas in Action is a good cause, they do this event for the kids and they would bow out if the Fun Run money was used for another project other than helping the kids. Last years money went to kids to send them to YMCA camp. The awards were given out at the CCDAC fundraiser, but was not connected with CCDAC as some had previously thought.
Next meeting is July 11. It is going to start out as a budget workshop and then will go in to a workshop covering the items stated above. Jason and Sal are going to work all the details for the Fun Run themselves and there
