Tail of Two Doggies
Various members of my family have been coming to La Manzanilla since we bought our little Casa 13 years ago. One of the community fundraisers we've supported since then is the spay and neuter clinic and more recently Peluditos animal rescue.
As we were dog lovers, we'd been contemplating getting a pup for years, reading about various breeds, trying to pick the perfect specimen: size, temperament, etc. It went on. Finally, last March, we decided it was time to take the plunge, and get a dog, and it should be from Peluditos.
So we visited the refuge with the idea of choosing one of the pups to adopt when we came back in the fall. Well, that visit made us decide two things: first, one dog is good but two dogs would be better, such good company for each other, and there are so many sweeties looking for a loving home; second, leaving it till the fall was too long, so we decided to go travel back in June, and bring the two, one year old pups we'd chosen, home with us. After booking flights, we called the airline to add the transport of the dogs to our tickets, but no go. We learned that they don't transport animals from Mexico after May 15th as it gets too hot in that part of the plane (makes sense). So it was driving.... Laura had most of the necessary vet procedures done before we arrived, and we finished them off during the week we were there. Then we were on our way home. Scruffy and Penny were angels in the car, just napping in their crates between frequent pit stops. Not a peep for five long days of driving from La Manzanilla to Toronto.
We've been back almost two months now, and admittedly, it's been busy, but Scruffy and Penny have really settled in with us, and the two of them are best buddies. It's been a steep learning curve, but they're doing well with training, and clearly enjoying their new lives. As for us... we get enthusiastic company on walks, and now know all the neighbours. Just hang on tight when the squirrels go by! We enjoy all the snuggles we could want, happy greetings in the morning or when we've been out for a bit... It doesn't get any better.
So I would like to encourage those who can, please consider adopting one (or maybe two) of the Peluditos pups. Have a dog already? Maybe adopt a dog for your dog. The refuge is so full, and these sweeties deserve a loving home. A love that will be returned in full measure.
