I have spent my entire adult life working in the World of Words—as an international journalist, author, feature writer, publisher, ESL instructor, memoir writing workshop facilitator, proofreader, and editor. My fate was sealed when I placed first among all high school students in the state of Ohio on a standardized English test as a 14-year-old freshman; subsequently, the faculty of my private girls’ school assigned me to tutor the growing number of foreign students. Thus began my love of language and culture. I earned a BA in News-editorial Journalism and International Relations, followed by an MA in Mass Communication. I paid for my second master’s degree, in Cross-cultural Sociology, by working as an academic editor for foreign professors and grad students.

Since landing in Mexico in 2002, I have spent half of my work week editing translations from other languages to English for a San Miguel company, as well as Chinese students’ college application essays to U.S. universities for two companies based in Shanghai. The other half of the week was devoted to editing fiction and nonfiction manuscripts (from short stories and essays to novellas and full-length books) for native English speakers. Now that the translation company owner has retired and Chinese citizens are banned from the United States, I am looking for more individual clients.

I take a teamwork approach: after a client reviews my explanations, questions, and suggestions under Comments, s/he can make further revisions and send the document back to me for a second look at no additional cost. I never change an author’s “voice,” and I think of myself as a cheerleader rather than a critic. I prefer final drafts in all genres except for Young Adult, Horror, Dystopian, Christian, and Fantasy. I do NOT do content/developmental editing. I will do a free sample edit of up to 1,000 words. I can also proofread your PDF file before it goes to print. (This would be a separate job.)
