Birthing a Community Center
Posted by CruzioG on April 2, 2024, 12:18 pm
Yes, become a contributing member to a budding center featuring medical specialists, youth job training, and a senior meal site right here in La Manzanilla.
This project is being headed by a long-time LM emergency volunteer group, led by Francisco Covarubias, and which is affiliated with the statewide emergency volunteer agency, BAEJAC. This agency has selected La Manzanilla as the appropriate site for this center and will be funding most of its development.
Francisco and his volunteer group need to establish their commitment to the project by literally 'cementing' it with a 15x15 slab of concrete. This will serve as both a beginning emergency aid site and a way of safeguarding the Ejido land contribution while the project proceeds. The Ejido has given the land but the project must be begun to keep the land.
Francisco is asking for your support. A building permit is in the works and a few funds are needed for the slab and first aid unit.
I'm hoping that we can support this beginning effort with whatever you can afford or want to give. A donation can will be placed at Flaca's Fruit Store or you can call me at 315 108 9280. Paypal works at cruzio13@mail.com.
Francisco and I will be reporting on donations received and inquiries. Thank you in advance. Cruz
Cruz, could you please give us more information??? They have established an office coming into town, quite beautiful I might add, and a facility is under construction...I also saw a new SUV with the new logo regarding the birthing center... I'm confused about the funding. I was told it was a gift to the town...Please set me straight....How was it started? and have I missed information pertaining to it's beginning???
The post is confusing in its wording! There is a birthing center being built and it is privately funded and coming right along. They have an office on the left side of the road coming into town!
This is completely different I believe and I would love to chat with Fransisco about it…perhaps Cruz could post his cell number! Also many more details are needed I think…what and who will be involved in activities, who can use it, just general information!
Fransisco is a lovely man to work with so I look forward to more questions answered!
Hola, Smitty, correcting my typing error, cruzio13@gmail.com.
And to everyone else, sorry for creating the 'birthing' confusion. I'm referring to a 'community' center, not to be confused with the wonderful birthing clinic which will be up beginning 2025 and that is being donated by Dr. N.
And yes, Francisco is an honest, 'true volunteer' who has offered 'free' emergency services for over 20 years to Los Ingenios and this pueblo. He relies on the fact that people will donate what they can or want. This has kept his old converted van in service. He has never 'demanded' or 'hounded' for payment and he is truly respected by the local residents.
This last Easter week, Francisco, along with a visiting BAEJAC crew, gave free emergency first aid care to close to 100 locals and visitors. This free service, during Easter, has been provided for many years.
Francisco has also served as the town's Delegado (Mayor) but his love has been providing emergency care and transportation in his make-shift ambulance.
Now, for the project. The 'SAREX' Community Center, being developed and donated by BAEJAC at the quarry, hopes to provide several free and low-cost services to the community and surrounding area residents, including ex-pats.
The services will be mainly medical; like lab, first aid, and x-ray, and include an area for seniors. Depending on space, they hope to provide job training in the medical field such as emergency and health care for aids.
This is a future program as obstacles and permits are negotiated. First aid services will likely be immediate.
I hope this provides some answers. We will be providing information as the project proceeds but please feel free with questions. Cruz and Francisco
PS: Francisco's no. is 315 100 7934. He doesn't speak English and this is his emergency services number.
This seems like it is something that already exists in part by having Centro de salud and the ambulance services here! I was thinking a community center like the old DIF building where everyone in town could participate in activities and social functions! A meeting space as well or perhaps classes, therapy and senior functions.
Hola, Stephanie. Yes, yes a center would be a wonderful and needed community space and was in the original plan presented to the Ejido by BAEJAC. However, the Sarex project was given only about 1/2 or 2/3s of the requested land and BAEJAC is into medical care and focus.
Part of the Sarex plan will be to complement and expand the Centro de Salud clinic care which is very limited and sometimes non-existent. Most everyone has to go to Melaque or Cihuatlan for lab, x-rays, and other services.
As BAEJAC has heard that emergency ambulance service is too expensive for many local residents, it will try to provide less expensive emergency care for the times when ambulance transportation is not needed.
As for seniors, it has been years since we had weekly meetings, activities, and excursions provided by La Huerta and the Delegado Pedro's wife. I remember them dearly and Francisco often hears that it is a need.
Now, I also recall that years ago, funding for a community center, including meeting and activities space, was deviated by a local leader. He decided that it was not needed and instead, two parks were developed. I'm hoping that someday a 'real' community center materializes as it usually becomes the heart of a community. Cruz
One small part of this post bothers me. This phrase: "As BAEJAC has heard that emergency ambulance service is too expensive for many local residents".... Our own La Manzanilla ambulance service will be back in operation next week, and we have always worked on donations. We tell people that our approximate cost of a service is $2000p, but we accept whatever amount someone can afford to donate. If that amount is nothing, that's fine, too. I felt compelled to make that correction.
