"The fire getting closer and closer to our property and home…with relentless winds to help it. Help/water needed!

As of 4:15, it has been nearly 3 hrs since Felipe called Protecion Civil, bomberos, 911, friends…we are doing our best to water and rake our property as it gets within a few mts. We really need help raking away dry brush…watching birds vacating their trees and revisiting nests is breaking my heart. "

Andy and I are up North but they definitely need some help fight the fire near them. Please help if you can.

If you have Reyes phone number please call and tell him to deliver water now! Felipe is using his hose to fight flames! Also posted on lm life for guys to go over to cut back dry brush from the house! Fingers crossed!

West just got back from Judy and Felipe's house. The bomberos were there, using their water, and the fire is still burning but mostly under control. If the wind kicks up, that's a different story. Now that it's dark, and because the property is so steep, there's not much else that can be done tonight.

Thank you to those of you who tried your best to help out here at our house yesterday. We had a very scary experience, fighting the fire which took off just after 1PM behind our house and wasn’t under control until just before sunset. Thank you so much Laura G ,Stephanie and Carol L for kindly putting messages up here and on La Manz Life and for sending water via Reyes tank, which refilled our tinaco right when it needed it . And thank you to our angels, Spencer and Connie, who responded to those messages and helped Felipe fight the fire ,literally for hours, keeping it away from our home, with only our garden hoses and rakes. A huge thank you to the Melaque Bomberos who arrived in time (4 hrs since our first calls for help )to prevent the fires from spreading any further down the hill to the many homes who live further down from us. And thank you Jeanne C, for advising West who came up with his rake ,machete and shovel and did his best to help out while navigating our ridiculously steep terrain. Bless his efforts and heart. This was an experience I hope no one reading this ever has to have . This morning we are grateful, we have learned a lot about the nature of fire and wind and the world and community surrounding us here and stand more ready and willing to help others than ever. May the rains come early and stay late this year!

More than welcome! Such a scary time to feel alone in endeavors to keep safe! I think it’s time to look into starting a bomberos project here to service our growing community and those nearby as waiting for hours just does not work, especially in our drying climate!

I have put out feelers and have gotten some results back rapidly as to who needs to be contacted and how to go about this and will see if something can be organized before the current administration changes with the incoming party! Will keep you posted!

In the small village of La Misión in northern Baja that I have been living in it was the La Misión Rotary Club that did tremendous fundraising for the bomberos. Proper fire fighting clothing, portable water sprayers, jaws of life, even a fire truck and bunkhouse but it took a village to make it happen but in the five years I’ve been there they are quick to action and incredibly well trained. Just saying.

Which begs the question..are there any Rotary club members living in LM currently or during high season that would like to sister city with LM and partially donate both time and energy to get this up and running for us? Inquiring minds are turning over any stones that could help us out!

So glad to hear that things are better today at Casa Colibri! I'm curious why it took so long for the bomberos to arrive. There's a big bombero base right as you turn to the right to go to Melaque. It's just after the gas station. The ambulance team has done training there at that base, and they seemed very well equipped. It shouldn't have taken more than 20 minutes to get there. That's a question I'd like answered. Since we have bombero teams so close by, why the wait?

Great information Raul. Thank you. That was my question throughout, Jeanne. Why so long? They arrived with apologies and “Hay fuegos en todos lados”. I double checked on where they’d come from and yes, it was confirmed, “Melaque”.
Honestly, after nearly 4 hours since the first calls for help, I was surprised to see them when they did arrive.
2 capable, bright, eager and able bodied men, fully equipped. As I wrote earlier, they prevented the fires from continuing on to other’ homes and property beyond our property. Much more could have been prevented if they’d come hrs earlier. Clearly more resources and man power is needed.

Judy, just been reading volumes on the Bomberos in Mexico and they are trained to service nearly any mishap from fires to accidents! Many are funded or given equipment from other charitable organizations in the North and there is even a group called Bomberos Across Borders! We need to contact some of these folks to see if either they can bump up the Melaque group with more guys and equipment or start one here to service Costa Allegra North of us! Wheels spinning!
