Scorpions are abundant!

Just a little message from the ambulance team urging you to be on the lookout for scorpions. We've had 4 calls for scorpion pics in the last week! If you get picked and are having any trouble breathing, call the ambulance immediately. The team keeps track of who has the antivenom and who doesn't. Not all hospitals or clinics have it in stock. Cihuatlan has been the best source so far, but that changes. These pics are very serious, so be cautious and get help!
Usually, about once a year I post this. Having nearly checked out due to foam at the mouth, loss of muscular control, and double vision due to a scorpion sting, I did an investigation. The pharmacist at the Farmacia Melaque (Javier) sold me a 20-pack of 25 mg. tablets of CLOROPIRAMINA, which he told me was the same medicine that I would receive for a scorpion sting at the Central de Salud. The difference is that at the clinic they either inject or deliver by i.v. I was stung a second time by a scorpion and took the cloropiramina and within 1-2 hrs. I was almost symptom-free and definitely with no anaphylaxis. Only 200 pesos for 20 tabs.
One of the smallest scorpions the bark scorpion found here is also the most venomous. Some think because it is small it is not deadly, not true at all.
How poisonous are scorpions in Mexico? "Scorpionism is one of the most important public health issues in Mexico. Intoxication by scorpion sting is in the first place among illnesses by poisonous animals and it is among the top twenty causes of mortality in the country, and in some states it is even among the top ten."
My first scorpion sting on Christmas morning! Thanks to Lauren for taking me to Cihuatlan hospital for anti-venom IV. I was experiencing anaphylactic shock and had constricted airways.
Thanks for the information, M Mann, and I'm sure it's good to have that medication on hand - maybe it's like Benadryl; however, the article above adds more information. Is it possible that your second sting was from a less powerful type of scorpion? Or a smaller one? And that's why you didn't need the actual anti-venom?
You can get anti venom in la manz. If you hike a lot it a good thing to carry. I have been hit too many times. Half the time I don't believe I was injected with venom as I had no symptoms. The small ones seem to have done the most damage, my thinking is that they haven't learned the correct dosage yet. Best advice is to stay calm and think of a way to slow the venom from hitting your heart all at once. If your lungs start to feel cool I would do double the dose and head for the hospital. One Love Live it!
