We've gone by ourselves a number of times, without a guide, and found it simple to get to.
We've also had Gerardo guide us along the way, and found that to be very much enjoyable, because he knows the birds and the flora and the people, and he'll throw in enough Spanish lessons to help you feel you've actually learned quite a lot of things.
You can find him at his shop next to Zazil.

Our first time we simply went to the arroyo and walked upstream 20 or 30 minutes until, lo, there were Las Joyas. On subsequent trips we've taken easy-to-spot trails that shorten the trip a little by avoiding bends in the creek bed. I do not recall any opportunities to get lost. Probably pretty nice up there now while it's still green and there's likely significant water in the pools.
