Chrono Cross I'd recommend with reservations. The story is also too convoluted at times (Masato Kato was the main writer on CT, XG and CC) though it's a light-hearted fantasy next to Xenogears. However, the basic gameplay is really damn good for a JRPG at the time - just running around the world map feels nice and you can run from any battle without fail. Plus it eliminates exp./level gaining in favor of incrementally gaining stats from battles so you don't have to grind. But it's still a serious RPG and you need to strategize. Iffy writing, great gameplay.
