Re: I didn't listen to the whole thing
Yeah, basically same with me re: early Star Trek exposure. The library had the TOS movies plus for some reason the first TNG season on tape. That and the television episodes then were about it, although at some time I caught some TOS episodes on one of those broadcast stations too small to even get into the TV listings but eventually lost it into the static. (I read somewhere that there are tons of non-cable broadcast stations now. I don't have an antenna. I used to love looking for out-of-town AM radio stations at night, but it's unlikely to be as much fun to look for the TV stations now that they've switched to all-digital, which is all-or-nothing quality-wise.) Never did catch the full (or even much of) the original series until I bought the DVD sets.
Didn't know Blish did other stuff: probably would read the Trek adaptations again before looking at his originals. Seem like something that would be cool to read when you're young and enthusiastic in the genre but which wouldn't much be worth reading when get a more discerning palate and less time to waste.
The Blish adaptations might even be called shortstorizations as the full volumes were the size of novellas!
