Re: Rimbaud almost singlehandedly makes me wanna learn French
I definitely wouldn't learn French just for Rimbaud. I have the Louis Varese translation and it's very literal - when I work through a sentence and come up with what it means in English, I find that she often has the exact same sentence. I'm sure I'm missing nuance with some of the word choices, but my seven years of school French (admittedly not recent) haven't helped much with that.
Queneau, on the other hand, does benefit since there's so much wordplay - e.g., it's fun realizing that when a character says "Esquiouze euss", it's a phoneticization of a poorly pronounced "Excuse us" in English.
