A "sweeping statement"...*sigh* no, I just got done saying that sometimes it worked on the show and sometimes it didn't which is NOT a sweeping statement. Would you like an example of when it didn't work? Okay, when they offed poor little Shireen Baratheon, for instance, it failed utterly--it barely advanced the plot, made a cheaply obvious point about religious devotion and one look at the little girl's facial deformities and you knew she was a goner. And it lasted so long when they burnt her that it devolved into sadism on the show's part.
