I could see a WSS story remake being interesting if it moved further into one of two opposite directions - either a) flesh out the story to make the characters feel more real and make the racial/class dynamics more specific (whether the setting is the same as the original film or moved to present day), or b) lean into the abstraction that's already present in a lot of the musical sequences from the original, getting rid of a lot of the dialogue, making the sets and coloring more extreme - something like a Powell/Pressburger approach. I could imagine Gina Prince-Blythewood doing the first well - for the second, I could imagine anyone from Steven Soderbergh to Terrence Malick to Almodovar to Alfonso Cuaron. Spike Lee could probably do either. But I can't envision a Spielberg version I'd be excited for.
