The Last Samurai was okay dumb entertainment but I'm not watching it again either. An American who was in Japan when it came out said the hype was huge. I was disappointing that that was the movie you were talking about, and not Kenji Misumi's last movie, which is supposed to be good.
I don't remember Elizabeth being too good.
Starship Troopers is really awesome. The commercials are the best part. Probably my favorite movie of 1997 (although I somehow still haven't seen Boogie Nights yet).
Stuff I watched in the last week:
The Limey (rewatch) - This is probably my favorite Steven Soderbergh movie, although there's not much to my reason for liking it so much. It's just a great neo-noir.
My Cousin Vinny - I had never seen this before, and it is wonderful. Probably the pulls off the "underdog who seems to suck at his mission at first but kicks ass when it counts," thing about as believably as it possibly could. What a great cast! And the script deserved and Oscar nomination, although the only nominee from that year I've seen is Unforgiven, which didn't win.
Two Flags West - Robert Wise cavalry western with a story co-written by Frank S. Nugent, who mostly worked with John Ford. It looks great and has a strong cast. The movie is decent overall, although one of the characters does something so horrible (in a great scene) that what the movie tries to do with him later can't be totally accepted.
Dead Reckoning - Bogart noir that I had not seen before. It's a good noir/mystery but it has the issue that alot of crime movies back then had: the ending feels deformed by the Hayes code.
Shock Proof - Yes, there is a movie written by Sam Fuller and directed by Douglas Sirk, and this is it. This is also the first Sirk I've seen in b&w and the first that isn't a girly melodrama. It's another good noir with another somewhat dubious ending, and if you've seen Sirk's later weepies then it's interesting to spot the seeds of them in this crime drama.
I'd be curious to know how accurate the f'd up rule for parole, as depicted in this movie, were accurate during this time period. Probably not very?
