Not really hearing a Kraftwerk connection
The electronic features in YMG are actually underutilized IMO- I'd probably like them more if they would have gone more in that direction. I'd say the Suicide and GBV comparison is more apt and would note that I didn't care for that first Suicide album at all and similarly thought it sounded unfinished and that it needed some bottom end. And I like the idea of GBV except Pollard arguably doesn't really know how to write good pop songs and neither do YMG.
Yes, I can imagine these songs with more conventional rock arrangements and IMO they'd probably sound better but wouldn't still wouldn't rise above being merely decent- they're just not very interesting from a songwriting standpoint. Even without the energy/creative arrangements, groups like Raincoats/Logic/Hermans also had material that was very unique and clever from both a musical and lyrical perspective.
