Look, I love The Beatles too but they're not the end all be all of pop songwriting. "flowing continuous melodic lines where every line is melodic line is different but connected to each other" WTF have you suddenly started taking acid? Yes, The Beatles wrote good bridges and added neat variations to their verse melodies but the idea that a song that follows the more traditional verse-chorus-verse structure is inherently inferior is ridiculous, especially since we're essentially talking about pop music if you insist on categorizing it as such.
As I said, I'm not a huge Berlin fan either but if you take a song like "How Deep Is The Ocean" well that's a beautiful melody with a beautiful chord progression and The Beatles couldn't have written it if threatened at gunpoint. And neither could the Mael brothers for that matter.
