Those notes aren't really that high

IMO what makes those songs hard to sing is that they're heavy rockers so you're also supposed to have a little grit in your voice and scream as much as sing. Nirvana songs sung "prettily" often don't sound right. Yes, it works to sing "About A Girl" in The Beatles' style (and it still takes some practice to master this) but that doesn't work on "Teen Spirit". But you can just still fake it by singing in a lower register (since Kurt is already pretty high on the first lines of the chorus).
"Heart Shaped Box" is one I have trouble with. During the verses, I can do maybe my most accurate Kurt impression (helps that it's one of my favorite Nirvana songs) but I don't even attempt the chorus because I can't do it with out sounding silly, screaming off key and/or hurting my throat.
