- I feel like it's at least important to know that the film is an adaptation (of a novel from 2016) which is unusual for Kaufman and this film, although I liked it more than I didn't, basically confirms that a uniquely gifted writer like Kaufman's talents are better utilized on their original works. Anyway, in some cases where the writing doesn't work,, it's hard to know whether Kaufman is truly at fault or if he was simply at the mercy of mediocre source material
- The ending is understandably getting a lot of backlash and you can add me to the choir. It's not the ambiguity that bugs me (this is Kaufman, after all), it's just clumsily executed and not particularly interesting.
- Between the red herrings and half-assed symbolism, this is absolutely the type of film that falls apart under analysis. The explanations are generally gonna embarrassing and/or poorly realized.
- It's a dialogue-driven film and most of the dialogue is engaging enough to sustain the long running time but IMO the film is ultimately saved (if it is indeed saved) by the performances, which don't seem to be getting enough attention, except for maybe the lead (and yeah she's good but IMO Toni Collette steals the show- another example of why she's one of the best actresses to emerge in the past couple decades
