BBs made loads of great songs during that period though and Pink Floyd had hardly any. A lot of it *sounds* interesting when it's on, but they're pretty forgettable songs compared to the classic stuff. And every now and then you hear something that's a *bit* like what they'd end up sounding like, but there's no much indication they were about to pull it all together.
Meddle should really have come out after Obscured By Clouds, I bet everyone would consider that the start of the classic run if it had. Not that Obscured By Clouds is bad but it feels like it belongs in the throwing-shit-against-the-wall collection.
Second half of Shine On is pretty disposable, yeah. The first half ends perfectly, no need for another 12 minutes of wanking around.
