The first version of "Vegetable Man" I heard was some live version one of my high school gfs found for me via Napster (holy shit haven't thought about that site in a minute lol) that blew the studio version away- should try to find it again. I mean, it's an awkward song in general but the studio recording/production makes it extra awkward and doesn't serve the song at all. That live version was much smoother and they actually jammed on the final "he's the kinda fellow etc" part which was pretty cool.
Agreed re: "Scarecrow"- the atmosphere on that one is amazing. Love the goofy percussion and it features some of my favorite Rick Wright organ coloring. It was released as a single and is a perfect example of what I was saying re: Syd's ability to create an interesting, compositionally unorthodox song with a handful of simple chords.
