I feel like a lot of the hate directed at "Bike" is due to its placement and admittedly it's a weird chose as closing number (the sound collage at the end is the only thing that really makes its placement warranted). But melody obviously wasn't the focus on that one- it's basically a blues tune (important to remember that Bo Diddley was Syd's biggest influence) but with goofy lyrics and Floyd atmosphere.
And actually, melody often isn't the focus with Syd and it's interesting that I love him so much despite this, even though melody is typically the main thing I look for (and my main focus with my own songs). As for the lack of structure and random chord sequences, that's what I was referring to when describing the unorthodoxy of his style- is a selling point to me but guess I can understand how others might not feel the same way. But FWIW I consider both "Flaming" and "Domine" among his best songs (probably my pick for best cuts on "Piper" actually)- "Domine" is particularly brilliant in its execution. I love every detail of that one.
