One thing that strikes me is this - Babbitt has stuck to one method of composition, i.e, serialism, for all of his life. Serialism is a very "rigid" technique, that is, there is nothing "random" or "chaotic" in these pieces "by design".
What strikes me as weird is that it's been around for about a century. Why haven't the ears of the general listener (me included) "adjusted" to serial composition?
Why does Schoenberg's "great discovery" (as any book on music would but it) produce music that most people still see as ####ING STUPID ASS TORTURE ARRRGH?
