Re: "Electric Ladyland" came out 2 years before Jimi died
With MTV I think Beavis and Butt-head was over by the time I started watching (one day I just turned to it and my parents didn't do anything. I never got permission or anything). If it wasn't, it was no longer the edgy "dangerous" show it once was. The Simpsons was a bit like that, too. I can kind of understand not wanting an impressionable kid to look up to the first-season Bart Simpson, for instance, but he was humanized pretty quickly and sometime or another I just watched it and the parents didn't care. (Cartman has gone the opposite route, from asshole to simply evil, over his run.)
I listened to a lot of top-40 radio in sixth grade, but I remember only a short while's worth of music before going to MTV and to the rock station. For some reason I've remembered the on-site joke, "K-Ci is the one with the shaved head. Jo-Jo is... the one with the shaved head". Wtf, brain?
No idea of what the first R-rated movie I saw was except that it wouldn't have been an action or horror movie. Probably some comedy. I guess there was one kid whose parents were stricter with him: in sixth-grade gym class he was amazed that one kid talking about a PG-13 movie, because he wasn't yet thirteen. He got made fun of for that.
