Bad Lieutenant (Herzog one) - Rewatch. I'm moving to New Orleans next month so I felt this was appropriate.
Bringing Out the Dead - Rewatch but not for like 15 years. First act - the ride with Goodman - is terrific; rest of the film isn't bad. The script is typical Schrader but visually its a good compendium of 90s aesthetic priorities
Leaving Las Vegas - Nic Cage giving a wonderful, bizarre performance over one of the worst scripts that Hollywood has ever put out. There's no sensible reason this was Oscar nominated and Showgirls was panned. Just aghast at this shit. Ending kinda needs to be seen to be believed. Overall I assume the positive reception this received was some kind of collective prank, or form of mass hysteria
The Vast of Night - Fine. New director clearly has some strong abilities, but after the first act this devolves into some painfully earnest alien shit that checks off all the genre cliches. Once you quickly figure out where this is all going it's just a matter of trying not to check your phone too much
