I've heard this, mostly in terms of their being among the first heavy rock bands, but their debut came out in 1968, the same year as In-a-Gadda-da-Vida (and Heavy, for that matter). From experience I've found that a lot of "hard-rocking" pioneers were pretty tame compared to what came after. The back of the Association's debut says, among other things (they play better blues than the Stones), that they rock harder than Paul Revere and the Raiders.
