I think it's definitely a movie I could cite as evidence of that Howard Hawks quote about how a good movie is three great scenes and no bad ones. There's parts of it I don't terribly care for (definitely some bits are heavyhanded), but the initial discovery of the signals and the eventual deciphering are great, and I like the ending (after the scene with the dead father, which I don't find totally convincing). I also appreciate how earnest the whole thing is. And of course Jodie Foster is terrific in it, hard to imagine it working as well with someone else as the lead. The special effects didn't bother me too much from my recollection.
