The Nurse Ratched thing is precisely the reason I've never been able to really love that movie. The back of my mind just keeps whispering "no, she's just doing her job; no, mentally ill people shouldn't be allowed to go out and get laid." The attempt at making her a real villain at the end over the Billy Bibbitt thing seems cheaper than anything Straw Dogs even threw at us at the end.
Ratched is one of the most hated villains in film history and they even had Sarah Paulson play her in a prequel miniseries recently where she did all manner of villainous horrible things. For most people she's pure evil; if the movie meant to convey that she wasn't, then it's a failure for the vast majority of its audience.
