Part of the reason for the band's dislike of the album is that they were going through a religious identity faith crisis thing at the time (a couple members of the band almost joined a cult named Shining Path) and part of it is that Bono lost his (probably not very good) lyrics sheet around the time of recording and they had to make up new lyrics really really fast.
I started my U2 fixation (disc-wise) with that 1980-90; to this date, I've never heard or seen Rattle & Hum, convinced that all the best songs from it are on that comp.
