Re: Speaking of Thompson
I want to say that I liked Hell's Angels more than Fear & Loathing...it was probably better "journalism" in general, with HST's general insufferable persona tempered by the fact that he gets the crap kicked out of him by dumb animals after a couple hundred pages of defending said dumb animals. I'm not really an expert on HST and in general always thought he was sort of overrated. The scene from F&L that I remember best is of course Gonzo threatening the snotty waitress, which is a sort of Roseanne-type situation where you're forced into rooting for a bad person because the other person is even worse. And you're right, I don't really remember what the cultural commentary in the book was anyway.
HST's buddy Tom Wolfe lived two years into the Trump debacle, he was increasingly conservative as he got older and supported GW Bush and the Iraq invasion, but I don't know what he ever had to say about Darth Cheeto before he croaked, he was too busy writing that crappy little book attacking Darwin.
