Sneering at Keanu in the mid 90s: I think that's because it's around this time that Keanu's star went through the roof from Speed and subsequently he got hit really hard with the "psst, he's really dumb in real life and he's a crappy actor" stuff (hell, I think I heard him call himself a "meathead" once in an interview) so there was an idea that he was sort of an undeserved A-lister around this time. Don't look at me; I think his high point is A Scanner Darkly, but it's only his high point because he doesn't really ruin it or anything. His low is probably Bram Stoker's Dracula, I've never heard anyone defend his work in that one.
There's an old 80s teen drama called Permanent Record that Keanu was in that is probably only remembered at all because he was in it; it got a glowing review from Ebert, which is how I'm aware of it.
