Always liked "Criminal" and "Shadowboxer" but never bothered checking out the album and I'm happy to report that, while the 2 songs I mentioned are undeniable highlights, the vibe/quality remains consistent throughout the album despite its length so if you dig the hits, you might as well check out the rest. Might have to check out some of the later stuff as well- Apple knows how to write (a few of her lyrics genuinely impressed me) and her soulful vocals are a refreshing antidote to the helium-infused modern musical landscape.
Fetch the Bolt Cutters
Have only listened to Fiona's debut but everyone keeps raving about this new one so figured I'd check it out. And um though her talent is still apparent, I mostly gotta say don't believe the hype. Some of the more melodic songs ("Shameika", I'm lookin at you gurl) are kinda fun but sound a bit too much like showtunes for my taste. But most of these seem like spoken word augmented by a bunch of bells & whistles, which maybe accounts for the misleading Beefheart comparisons. Fiona's gifts as a lyricist were apparent from the debut and that one also had some soulful, well-crafted melodies- this is perhaps more ambitious but mostly just comes off as contrived, gimmicky quirkiness.
Yeah heard about the "Stars" use on "Bojack" but haven't given that show another chance yet (gave up early but have been told you gotta stick with it)
