Was really looking forward to this and really wanted to enjoy it more than I did. The idea of a Pixar movie about jazz, mortality and individuality featuring Tina Fey as both a voice actress and writer seemed like it had the potential to be among Pixar's greatest achievements. But though there's some great ideas here, they mostly fumble the execution. The "Casper The Friendly Ghost"-style design of the souls and the spirit worlds they inhabit was disappointingly dull, the laughs were few and far between and while I kept hoping that the film would redeem itself with a poignant and profound ending, it misses the mark in this department as well- it doesn't feel earned and isn't nearly as effective as it should be. It mostly reminded me of "Inside Out" (also written/directed by Docter) which had similar themes, ambitions- and flaws. I personally found "Inside Out" to be pretty lame and overrated but lots of folks liked that one so if that describes you, you might also enjoy "Soul" more than I did. I just can't help thinking that this was a missed opportunity.
