I like it but it's not my favourite either. I'm guessing fans like it because it's as close as they ever got to making a straightforward 'serious' rock album.
That might also explain why La Cucaracha got a backlash, because for anyone hoping they were moving to a more mature stage of their career it'd seem like a step backwards into genre piss takes.
I get that. But hearing it now knowing it's the last one (I assume anyway, and kind of hope - anything new they put out now would be a 'reunion album' at this point) it kind of works as a finale. It's sort of like a mixture of Chocolate And Cheese and their later albums. Not as good as Chococlate And Cheese, but it still has some excellent track on it.
Personally I probably would've put this great New Romantics parody off the Friends EP on the album proper:
I read up on the circumstance surrounding the break up. I remember hearing about some of it from the time, but it's a bit grim. Apparently Gene would get the stage hands to procure drugs off the fans outside the show, demanding "Hard drugs, none of that hippy weed shit!"
