In their recruitment efforts they trot out two formulations: (a) Libertarianism is fiscally conservative but socially liberal; and (b) libertarians promote both economic and personal freedom. Who can object to good financial stewardship, or to "freedom"? Of course libertarian economic policy is the stuff of nightmares, but teenagers don't and didn't give a shit about economics.
I was a libertarian in my late high-school years and I'm not too proud to say I didn't really understand it at all.
There are also the political-compass tests designed to steer the respondent to the philosophy.
