Music videos that aspire to be like a short film with a "plot" is always a bad idea, I think. One curious effect is that you almost tune out the song. Or at least I do. I barely remember a thing about the Smashing Pumpkins song and I just watched the video three minutes ago.
There's a Bob Dylan video from the 80s directed by Paul Schrader that's like that. It's a whole arty thing where Bob Dylan is in Japan and he gets arrested and you're so occupied by following this goofball story that the song doesn't matter. I can't even remember what the song was. Both Dylan and Schrader later regretted it.
