It is funny how much whinier Thom is on Pablo though. Doesn't really turn me off since he pulls off the songs with his voice but I really wonder how insecure he must have been during this period. "I'm better off dead" - "I Can't..." - "stop whispering, start shouting" - the lyrics to Creep and Thinking About You. It definitely fits to a tee with the other grunge stuff at the time but I also feel some irony too, or at least its so blunt and straight- up with his feelings that it is interesting either way.
Its crazy how much better his lyrics gotten one album later but I wonder how his upbringing must have been before the band blew up..
"I Can't" is usually looked at as one of the worst songs and the most generic but honestly it kind of sounds like some twee pop with a female singer that I've heard before. And there's a TON of REM influence on this record too that no one mentions for some reason.
