Little Dieter Needs to Fly
A powerful documentary in which former Vietnam POW Dengler recounts the harrowing circumstances of his capture and miraculous escape (on location no less- good ol' Herzog). Heavy stuff but not as depressing as it may sound, mainly thanks to Dengler's charm and matter-of-fact manner of describing the horror he endured.
Okay, this is basically a robot version of "E.T." but what kid wouldn't love that? I certainly did as a kid. Doesn't hold up as well watching it as an adult (generally a bit clunky and Guttenberg is particularly insufferable)) but my nostalgia helped me enjoy it, even if the sequel has arguably aged better.
Clever concept and a charming cast, a nice n' sweet little comedy that I wish were a bit funnier but was still basically engaged by. I mean, who doesn't love little shriveled Irish geezers in collective pursuit of their very own pot o' gold in the form of a dead man's winning lottery ticket?
