Foreigner - Juke Box Hero: hoodoo boy, this one. It's forever tangled in my mind with a friend of mine in high school. He was a weird dude (went home by 4pm so he could watch Yu-Gi-Oh in the basement, tried to order the Captain's Special at Long Jong Silver, shit like that.) and came across this song and he ####ing couldn't get enough of it. He branched out into '70s dad rock -- "Heat of the Moment", "Worlds Apart", "Let My Love Open the Door", "Come Sail Away, and so on and so on -- it became his favorite genre. (Last I knew he was going back to study for a third degree. How is he going to have any experience when he's looking for a career in his early 30s? And who's paying for all this?)
Huey Lewis and the News - The Heart of Rock and Roll is Still Beating: yeah, what a badass Rick and roll song. It seems that usually tribute songs like this sound nothing like the style they're trying to represent, and are often a sign of the end for it. Anyway it's a shit song and it sucks, but Huey is such an easy target that I'll end here.
Billy Idol - White Wedding: awesome! I've heard he was great before turning commercial but his two megahits make it worthwhile to me (did he cover "Mony Mony" or was that some other dude? That one sucks. In Greek, "phóbō" means "I make scared". You have to use the passive -- "phóbomai" -- to indicate that, literally, "I am scared", which is its chief meaning.)
Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven: one of the first tracks I ever downloaded off Napster, but I just don't like it. Before I heard it I expected some kicking ass. Probably didn't have the patience or maturity to get anything out of; still this is a nothing song for me. I've given it a lot of tries but I don't understand the hype around that album.
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under the Bridge: This band holds zero appeal to me, and "Under the Bridge" holds even less because it sounds nothing like the Peppers. Never followed this band: was this their big sellout album/single?
Billy Joel - Piano Man: Oh, you didn't know? Yer ass better caaaall somebodaaaaay! It's me, it's me, the D-O-double-G, with the green goddess Tori! Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages. D-Generation-X proudly brings to you, it's WWF tag team champions of the woooooorld-- the Road Dogg Jesse James, the badass Billy Gunn, the NEW AGE OUTLAWS!" " And if you're not down with that, we got two words for ya SUCK IT!!! Like this song sucks.
