That scene is terrible but you could take it out of the movie without affecting the rest. It weird that it's there, so long after they last used him. If there's any comprehensible reason for it to be there then I guess it would be that the movie is probably an attempt to win back fans that they alienated with Moonraker, and throwing in Blofeld was supposed to help that.

Well it's not part of the series, just like the first two versions of Casino Royal aren't. It's also a remake of Thunderball, in case you forgot.
I don't have to watch Quantum of Solace before Skyfall, do I? I remember that Casino Royal set up Quantum of Solace, but the everyone hated QoS and I never watched it.
