Oh I saw the Anderson today
I liked it *way* more than I expected - easily my favorite one of his since Fantastic Mr Fox. Apparently the consensus is that this is "minor" Anderson and, more than normal, it invites the regular criticisms of his stuff being style over substance. This one almost entirely eschews the more emo side of his work and is just a continuous riff of visual ideas, references, terrible word play, eccentric performances, etc. Basically just Wes Anderson messing around and shoving in everything that comes to his mind, so I'll leave it up to you if you think that sounds great or excruciating. The film is more or less three short stories; the middle one is the weakest and drags the whole thing down for me. But even in that part, there's at least one interesting/memorable visual bit per minute. Also substantially raises my opinion of Jeffrey Wright as an actor.
I also caught Last Night in Soho this week, which was emphatically not better than I expected. It's definitely an improvement on Baby Driver, but a total mess otherwise. Thematically it's a mish mash of pop culture nostalgia, mental health surrealism a la Repulsion, and various forms of woke politics. It looks good and moves along quickly, but mostly just feels like a not-very-bright guy trying to make some weird point, and just feels like a waste of time by the end.
