Weirdly, I don't tend to get too excited about sandwiches as a concept, largely because they so often disappoint me. I'll say a patty melt for one I always enjoy (as long as you're not the place near me that puts mushrooms on it and doesn't disclose it on the menu). I've had better sandwiches, but they'd be specific orders from specific places (e.g. the lamb meatball sandwich at a place in Brooklyn).
WHAT IS THE ONE THING THAT YOU OWN THAT YOU SHOULD REALLY THROW OUT?
Some sneakers with holes in them I keep around as "backups" but never wear.
WHAT IS THE SCARIEST ANIMAL?
The ones I fear in practice most are rattlesnakes, having been warned specifically of one near a hiking trail once or twice in California. Mountain lions make me nervous too, but a) they're pretty rare and b) there's really no point in trying to be vigilant about them, because if one wants to attack me I probably won't see it coming.
APPLES OR ORANGES?
I don't love either, but I probably eat apples more often, and also occasionally bake with them.
HAVE YOU EVER ASKED SOMEONE FOR THEIR AUTOGRAPH?
Only at book signings - Joe Boyd, Tom McCarthy, and Dave Eggers. (Allie Brosh would have been a fourth, but I got tired of waiting in the line and just asked my partner to have Brosh sign for me as well).
WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENS WHEN WE DIE?
I don't believe in any sort of afterlife, which I think answers the question.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ACTION MOVIE?
Hot Fuzz probably.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SMELL?
Garlic cooking in oil is a pretty basic but great one.
WHAT IS YOUR LEAST-FAVORITE SMELL?
The worst thing I've smelled lately is a package of tofu that had somehow gone bad and smelled literally like shit, but even worse, when opened.
EXERCISE: IS IT WORTH IT?
Yes, thank you for the reminder that I don't do it enough.
FLAT OR SPARKLING?
WHAT IS THE MOST-USED APP ON YOUR PHONE?
YOU GET ONE SONG TO LISTEN TO FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE: WHAT IS IT?
Excluding long-form things that I can kind of pretend are single songs (e.g. the second disc of Kate Bush's Aerial), I'll say Fairport Convention's "Who Knows Where the Time Goes".
WHAT NUMBER AM I THINKING OF?
DESCRIBE THE REST OF YOUR LIFE IN FIVE WORDS.
Can't think that far ahead.
CATS OR DOGS?
Probably dogs, just because I have not enjoyed dealing with litter boxes when catsitting for friends. But I like both.
