- I give kudos that they try to explain why Goldfinger keep James Bond alive when he was captured rather than just immediately kill him. However a) There was no reason to spare James Bond at the beginning of the movie after James Bond sabotage his card game. I mean Goldfinger sent Oddjob to kill Jill Masterton. WHy not kill the man who was responsible in causing Jill to betray him, costing him to lose the card game and then sleeping with Jill (assuming that GOldfinger was somewhat interest in her) especially since James Bond is lying there unconscious. i almost tempted to do a video edit of Oddjob knocking out Sean Connery and then fade out to credit as an alternate ending of the film. Then at the end when the Goldfinger was executing the plan of nuking Fort Knox especially after knocking out all the guards. At the point there is no point keeping him alive and he should have been executed. Also maybe you could justify capturing him at the beginning but when James Bond managed to escape the prison and then later recaptured by Pussy Galore, surely at this point he is causing more problem alive than dead. Even if he choose to spare him, why didn't he return him back to prison instead of letting him roam around seducing Pussy Galore.
- There was a missed opportunity with having Tilly Masterton as the Bond Girl. It would actually make sense thematically in the movie. You have Goldfinger murdering Jill. You have M criticising Bond for being unprofessional jeapardising his mission with his womanising behaviour. You would think this would set up a dilemma whether James Bond having to choose between women or his mission. Then you have Tilly aiming for revenge against Goldfinger and at the same time James Bond also wanting revenge. Both have a mission to stop Goldfinger but will their feelings for each other interfere with each other respective goals? You could have James Bond having to chooser between rescuing Tilly or stopping Goldfinger (and then James Bond ingeneniously accomplishing both). Tilly either being a comic relief character of trying to be like James bond at fighting/killing but being incompetent at it or conversely have James Bond training her with weapons so that eventually she becomes competent with her weapon and maybe she is one that kills Goldfinger in the end.
I guess setting her up as the Bond girl but then killing her was considered shocking for the audience. It might have worked if the actual Bond Girl was any good.
I'm not sure why James Bond got out of the car which led to Tilly death. Couldn't he just reverse and drive off?
- Pussy Galore is bad Bond Girl. I mean this women leading an all female flying group. I have no idea what was Ian Flemming thinking naming a character that other than he was really horny. According to the audio commentary, Apparently the novel is worst having her lead some sort of lesbian supervillain group, James Bond theorising that homosexuality occurred due to giving women the right to vote. That James Bond cured her homosexuality due to his charisma.
Let just say this Pussy Galore is a villainous women who had no qualms supporting a terrorist attack of nuking and only changed her mind because of how sexy James Bond is. Really the fitting end is her dying in the movie rather than being the bond girl. There was also an uncomfortably seduction scene where she was resisting until giving in to attraction. Sort of No really means yes message that wouldn't fly in todays environment.
- Why did Goldfinger give an elaborate show to all the gangster if Goldfinger is going to kill him anyway.
- The scene where you have all the soldiers just suddenly drop unconscious visually look goofy
- What makes Oddjob so loyal that he is willing to sacrifice his life and stay behind and stop James Bond and get nuked?
Ultimately the film saving grace is that I find it a funny, entertaining movie compared to the earlier film that I could overlook the flaws. I find the whole James Bond being captured and all the CIA thinking everything is fine and James Bond attempt to notify them failed badly and them seeing James bond talking to Pussy Galore and assuming that he has everything under control.
It not as good as From Russia With Love but better than Dr No.
